Wairarapa family photographer: Waiohine Gorge

Kasey, AJ and their children Indyanna and Macauley are true outdoorsy types!

They were the lucky winners of the Wairarapa Lucalia Photography Father's Day competition last year. They won a mini break for the family including accommodation at Mount Bruce Lodge, a day out at Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre with lunch at Kākā Café, a family photography session with me and an heirloom book of their photos to keep.

Kasey said: "We love the outdoors especially in summer on the lake or river wakeboarding or biscuiting but over all just being in each other’s presence."

But it was how she described dad AJ that got my attention as the winning entry "We would love to win this adventure and family photo session to create and cherish the memories for years to come. Earlier this year my Husband age 31 had a mild stroke which was a very scary time it makes you truly stand back and appreciate the small things."

"Often being the one on the other end of the camera I’m never in these memories that are created with our children and my husband."

For their outdoor documentary-style family photo session Kasey chose Waiohine Gorge because Indyanna loves climbing and swinging from an adventurously tangled massive tree (see below!). We headed across the suspension bridge over the fast flowing river. It was drizzling but that didn't dampen the enthusiasm the kids had for bouncing! I loved it! Then they showed me their favourite tree, before walking through the forest to find the waterfall.

Everyone was happy to paddle in the stream before tramping back to the bridge. We then descended to the river where AJ taught Macauley how to skim stones. Such an important life skill! He did a great job.

Thanks so much Kasey and family for a fun outing!

PS: if 2019 wasn't a tough enough year for this lovely family, just before Covid-19 hit AJ opened his own electrical business Wired Wairarapa. Do check him out: a happy-go-lucky sparky servicing Wairarapa-wide.
