Award winning Marlborough birth and family photographer: Lucalia Photography

Marlborough birth and family photographer

I am absolutely humbled and honoured to have been awarded two awards at the 2024 New Zealand Institute of Professional Photographers (NZIPP) Iris Awards. A Bronze and one Silver Distinction.

I will write separate articles explaining each award, this blog is for the Bronze I received in the Documentary category.

I provide outdoorsy families who hate awkward poses with documentary photography in Marlborough and Tasman regions.

Thank you so incredibly much to my amazing clients for trusting me to capture your special days.

And thank you for allowing me to share your precious family moments.

The thing I love most about documentary photography is ability to tell true stories. Curating hundreds of images down into a succinct and clear story is incredibly difficult. There will always be multiple stories worth telling within a birth space. I often choose a sub-plot to shine a light on.

What is birth photography?

Birth photography is pure documentary photography in it's rawest form. I capture labour, birth and just after the birth of your baby. Naturally without direction, posing or staging. I focus on the emotions, bonds between you and your birth partner and new baby.

Why have your baby's birth photographed?

There are so many powerful reasons why you might like to have a birth photographer:

- Document the process leading up to and moment your child was born

- Celebrate the love and bond between you, your birth partner and your baby

- Allow the photos to remind you of how strong you were giving birth (or fill in the gaps)

- Gift the photos to your child when they grow up. Show them how much they are loved, right from the start.

This birth series is all about about trust and one very strong wāhine.

Hannah trusted her husband Billy who provided amazing support. She trusted her body to do what it did naturally. She trusted her wonderful midwives Gwen and Sacha.

At the end of a long and hard labour, she welcomed her beautiful third daughter Tui into the world at home.

Hannah said:

"Oh my goodness, these photos are absolutely beautiful!! You have done an absolutely amazing job, we will cherish these photos forever! Billy said you are part of our journey. Thank you so so much."

Ever since I had my first son four years ago, I have wanted to document a birth. I'm so grateful to bear witness. Thank you for trusting me to be with you when you are the most vulnerable.
